Why particle size matters
Grain size determines how quartz sand behaves in a particular process. A filter depends on flow and bed structure, a construction mix on layer thickness and texture, and abrasive work on the intensity of surface treatment.
Customers therefore need more than quartz sand in general: they need material within a defined particle-size range.
How industrial screening works
Dry sand is fed to the screening machine and passes through sieves with specified opening sizes. Smaller grains pass through the appropriate screen while larger grains continue to the next separation point.
A combination of screens allows the material to be divided into several streams. Each stream represents a defined size range and is then directed to packaging or storage.
- condition and specification of the installed screens;
- consistent feed of dry material;
- absence of agglomerated grains and foreign inclusions;
- stable particle-size distribution in the finished fraction.
The value of a consistent fraction
Excess fine or coarse grains change material performance. In a filter bed this may affect water flow, in a mix it may change consistency, and in surface treatment it can alter the uniformity of the finish.
A stable particle-size distribution helps customers repeat their process and estimate material consumption more accurately.
