How grain size affects the result
Finer grains produce a more even profile and make treatment easier to control. Coarser grains transfer more impact energy and remove stubborn contamination or weak layers faster, but increase the risk of damaging the substrate.
The same fraction can behave differently when pressure, nozzle diameter or stand-off distance changes. Selection therefore covers the whole blasting setup, not only the abrasive.
Information needed for selection
To select a sensible starting point for testing, define the substrate, the coating or contamination to be removed and the required finish.
- glass, concrete, metal or another substrate;
- frosting, cleaning or surface profiling;
- thickness and strength of the layer to remove;
- equipment type, nozzle and working pressure.
Always begin with a test area
Start at low intensity on an inconspicuous area. After checking texture and cleaning rate, adjust pressure, distance or fraction.
Coarse abrasive may be unsuitable for precision components, thin metal or decorative glass. The contractor should make the final choice after testing.
